In the days leading up to United’s season opener at Goodison Park next Monday, six Manutd.com journalists will provide opinions on a number of Reds-related topics. To kick things off, we’ve kept it nice and simple…
What are you most looking forward to in 2012/13?
Adam Marshall: “I know it sounds simplistic but I’m just looking forward to seeing United play in the Barclays Premier League again. From the moment it became apparent at the Stadium of Light that City had snatched the title, I’ve been itching to see the Reds launch a bid to get the trophy back.”
Steve Bartram: “I can’t wait to see the impact of Shinji Kagawa at Old Trafford. Our midfield perhaps lacked a bit of invention and unpredictability in advanced areas last season, and he brings both of those in abundance. I see parallels with David Silva, and there are promising signs already of how he has linked up with our wingers and forwards in pre-season. For me, Kagawa’s nailed-on to become a key player.”
James Tuck: “Like most Reds, I look forward to our trips to Liverpool and this season’s Anfield encounter, on 23 September, will be an early test of our (and their) title credentials. It comes on the back of the first Champions League matchday; in the last three seasons our results after the opening European game have been: Chelsea 3-1, Liverpool 3-2, City 4-3. I’m ready for another thriller.”
Paul Davies: “Maintaining a title challenge in the absence of Nemanja Vidic, our skipper and most influential central defender, was impressive last season, but having his reassuring presence back will be a huge lift. His replacements – especially Jonny Evans – performed admirably in his absence, but Vida remains one of the best defenders in the world game. He’s a leader of men, a powerhouse at the back.”
Gemma Thompson: “Much like Adam, I can’t wait to just see the lads back out there. It’s been a very long summer. We’ve always been brilliant at responding when the chips are down and I have every faith we’ll do so again. Whether it will be enough to win the title remains to be seen, but Kagawa’s arrival excites me and the strides Cleverley has made in the last year could have a big impact on our campaign. Let’s just hope we have better luck with injuries.”
Nick Coppack: “Each Paul Scholes appearance is a blessing and the prospect of extracting another 30-odd games from him this season makes the mouth water. He’s the most gifted footballer I’ve had the pleasure of watching regularly and even at the age of 37 he’s generally a class above anybody else on the pitch. We know he won’t be here forever – we thought we’d lost him for good last season – so enjoy him while you can.”
