Manchester United were given another thorough workout in Tuesday night’s third tour game against top J-League side Yokohama F•Marinos but succumbed to a late 3-2 defeat.
In steamy conditions akin to those in Bangkok, the Reds were stunned inside the first minute when Brazilian striker Marquinhos fired home, and the hosts threatened to extend that lead early on.
But David Moyes’ men, who are looking sharper with each pre-season outing, gradually got into the game and Jesse Lingard netted his third goal in two matches following good work down the right by Wilfried Zaha.
United went ahead when Masakazu Tashiro diverted Adnan Januzaj’s free-kick into his own net, despite the defender’s best efforts to keep it out. But Fabio (theirs, not ours) headed home a corner after the break to draw the Marinos back on level terms.
And with time running out, substitute Yoshihito Fujita sidefooted past David De Gea to hand United a second defeat on Tour 2013 presented by Aon.
There was a raucous atmosphere all night, at both the red and blue ends of the Nissan Stadium, but the biggest cheer was reserved for the second-half introduction of Shinji Kagawa.
