Robin Van Persie Community Shield Reaction

Robin pleased for Moyes

Robin van Persie was delighted to play his part in helping David Moyes secure his first trophy as manager of Manchester United.

The Dutch striker’s brace at Wembley on Sunday secured a record 16th Community Shield triumph for the club and Moyes’ first in charge of the Reds. And van Persie hopes it’s the first of many successes under the Scot.

“It’s been a very good day. It’s the first of five [trophies available this season] and we knew we could win one after just one game today and we did that,” he told MUTV.

“Everyone wanted to win for the manager and the new staff and, of course, for the players as well because it’s always nice to win a trophy. It’s important for the manager and the staff to win trophies and to get the first one in only after a month or so is great.”

Van Persie opened the scoring after just six minutes with what he described as an “unusual” type of goal after steering home a header from 14 yards out. He recorded his second via a large deflection off Wigan’s James Perch but the Dutchman joked that it remains his strike.

“It’s my goal because it was going on target,” he added. “It wasn’t the nicest goal, but it was an important one because after that Wigan weren’t really in the game. We controlled things.

“Today was a good day for us and a good start to the season. It was very important to win. Now we can look ahead to next week’s game against Swansea.

“The first five games [of the season] are very tough, but we have to look at things game-by-game. There are some big challenges there, but we are ready.”
