It wasn’t convincing, but progress was all that mattered on Wednesday as Manchester United booked a place in the FA Cup fourth round with a slender 1-0 win over West Ham.
Things started well for Sir Alex Ferguson’s much-changed team as Wayne Rooney met Javier Hernandez’s cross to slide the ball into an open goal, before the Reds went on to dominate possession and territory during a one-sided first half at Old Trafford.
West Ham showed some fight after the break and tested Anders Lindegaard with a selection of crosses, but the Hammers ultimately lacked any real attacking menace.
Victory could and perhaps should have been wrapped up well before the final whistle after Rooney missed from the penalty spot, but in reality, progress was never really in doubt.
