League Cup 2010
Wayne Rooney sprung off the bench to fire United and Sir Alex to a successive League Cup triumph with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.
Having knocked Manchester City out in a fiercely contested semi-final, the onus was on the Reds to finish the job against the Villains and claim the first trophy of the decade.
Michael Owen enjoyed contrasting emotions; scoring the equaliser to James Milner’s opener before exiting through injury. He was replaced by Rooney, whose header sealed victory in the 74th minute.
After the match, the boss paid tribute to Owen’s predatory scoring instincts: “He did really well for us and scored a goal to get us back in the game. He’s good at picking up crumbs. He’s as good as anybody at that.”
