Sir Alex Ferguson 25 Years Story | Champions League 1999

Champions League 1999

26 May 1999 – a date that will forever be ingrained in every United fan’s memory.

Champions League 1999

It was the day on which Sir Alex Ferguson led United to their greatest ever triumph as the Reds sealed an incredible Treble with a last-gasp victory like no other over Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp.

United had begun the 1998/99 season in the Champions League qualifying round. LKS Lodz were successfully dispatched with, before the Reds navigated their way through the group stages following memorable clashes against two of the competition’s big guns – Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Brondby, the other competitor in Group D, were soundly beaten home and away. A 3-1 aggregate win over Internazionale followed in the quarter-finals, before a stunning come-from-behind victory over Juventus in Turin in the semis secured the Reds’ spot in Barcelona and a rematch with Bayern.

Sir Alex’s men went behind to an early Mario Basler goal in the final, but, in keeping with the drama that had become a running theme throughout the campaign, the Reds snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when Sheringham and Solskjaer famously pounced in injury-time. Football… bloody hell.
