Sir Alex added the League Cup – going under its Rumbelows guise – to his burgeoning trophy collection with a 1-0 win over Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest at Wembley.

Brian McClair scored the only goal to seal an inaugural triumph in the competition, making it a day to forget for future Reds Teddy Sheringham and Roy Keane.

The celebrations were short-lived, however, as United’s lead at the top of the old first division was overthrown by rivals Leeds.
