Manchester-born Tom Thorpe is an athletic defender who can also play in midfield.

The local lad will have been disappointed not to cement a place in Warren Joyce’s Reserves after captaining the Academy side to FA Youth Cup glory in 2011 but finished the season positively with a call-up to the England Under-19 squad. Indeed, he was named captain by coach Noel Blake ahead of the European Championship finals in Estonia.

After signing his first professional contract at United on 22 July 2010, he will be looking to push on and did manage 19 appearances in all for Joyce’s second string, albeit with only 12 coming as a starter.

At least he was able to prove his versatility by adapting to a holding midfield role. Aside from his natural defensive qualities, Tom is also assured and composed on the ball and a good passer. He is capable of bringing the ball out of defence and also offers an aerial threat from set-pieces in the opposition box.

Some injury niggles did not help his cause at the start of the 2011/2012 season but after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he was one of the players he’d consider sending out on loan, there is much to look forward to in 2012/2013 for a talented individual keen to make his mark at Old Trafford.
